Arcade Classics Frogger is a mini-arcade tabletop port of the 1981 arcade hit video game Frogger developed and published by Basic Fun! under license of Konami and released in 2017. It is number "06" of the Arcade Classics series. It features the original port of Frogger developed by Chinese company JungleTac.

Description[]

A tabletop mini-arcade cabinet port of the 1981 arcade hit video game Frogger. The machine is powered by three "AA" batteries. The cabinet is made of black plastic with yellow linings, with dimensions of 5.75″ height × 4″ width × 2″ depth, and the bezel features many differently-sized Frogger sprites from the original 1981 arcade game. The cabinet features a horizontally-oriented screen and the control panel has a four directional digital joystick and a big white Start/Pause button. On its front, the cabinet has two large red buttons that stand for the coin chutes of a real arcade cabinet, one to turn the machine on and off, and the other that controls the volume on four levels (soft, medium, loud, and mute). While the cabinet has two speaker exits on the front, only the left one is real, so the sound output is monaural. The music score is completely different than that on the original arcade game (due to copyright issues).

The game itself is the same original version of Frogger that was developed by Chinese company JungleTac and which was included on Majesco's previous Konami Collector's Series: Arcade Advanced and Frogger plug-and-play controllers.[1] As such, it isn't a direct port of the arcade game, but rather version that is closer to what a NES port would have been like (Frogger never received an official NES port). The graphics in this port are less detailed and use a different palette than those on the arcade, and the musical score is completely different (due to copyright issues), but otherwise, it is a faithful recreation of the original game and includes all of its elements (five lanes on both the highway and river sections, Lady Frogs, Crocodiles, Otters, etc.). Another difference is that the game is now horizontally-oriented, allowing to display more of the sides of the playfield. This screen ratio difference allows for more items to be onscreen at once (e.g.: more floating logs, more groups of turtles, etc.), making the game easier as hazards can be seen coming from further away.

Gameplay[]

The objective of the game is to safely guide all frogs to the berths located at the top of the screen while avoiding all the hazards that are along the way. The frog first has to make it across a highway with heavy traffic and then cross a river without falling into the water by hopping on logs and turtles floating on it, as well as avoiding many natural predators.

Trivia[]

  • This mini-arcade version of Frogger by Basic Fun! is also colloquially known as the "box" version to differentiate it from the "blister pack" version, another Frogger mini-arcade released by the same company the previous year, and which features an LCD version of the game instead.
    • Besides the cabinet colors and technology involved, one of the most notable differences between these two mini-arcade cabinets is that the 2017 version has the joystick on the left side of the control panel, while the 2016 version has it on the center.
    • Likely due to the technology involved, the "box" version is usually more expensive than the "blister pack" version.
  • This particular mini-arcade is known for producing garbled sounds, which were neither present on the previous 2016 mini-arcade (which uses the same soundtrack) nor on the Konami Collector's Series: Arcade Advanced and Frogger TV Arcade plug-and-play controllers, hinting the issue could originate from the actual speaker used in this version.
