Frogger: The Great Quest[]

"Little is known about this monstrous behemoth, but some say he was once worshipped by the ancients. He is extremely fast and ferocious, and a foe that should be avoided if at all possible."

Description[]

Bone Cruncher, the wolf-like monster, is encountered a few times while Frogger is traveling through The Dark Trail Ruins. He is referred to as the "Stinky Biggie" by Wild Thing. According to his official description, Bone Cruncher may have some connection with the establishment of the original civilization, possibly worshipped by it.

Bone Cruncher turns out to be a formidable foe, rendering all of Frogger's attacks totally ineffective against him and instead forcing the frog to hide away every they cross paths. Fortunately, in the end, Frogger manages to use a Shrink Stone to shrink Bone Cruncher down to a small size, and then just picks him up and puts him in his bag. However, this isn't the last that is seen from this monster.

In the final area of the game, The Towers of Joy Castle, Frogger finally reaches the top of the castle's tower, where he meets the main antagonist, the Magical General, who is holding both Princess Joy and the Fairy Frog Mother captive, and who is also protected by his two personal guards, which seemingly Frogger has no chance against. However, following advice from the Fairy Frog Mother, Frogger takes Bone Cruncher out of his bag and, after being dispelled by the Fairy Frog, he grows back to his normal size and scares away the two guards who jump out the window in fear, evening Frogger's odds against the Magical General in a fairer fight.

Trivia[]

  • The way Frogger defeats Bone Cruncher in The Dark Trail Ruins alludes to other popular ways of giants being defeated in tales, such as David and Goliath, where a much smaller and weaker hero defeats a tall and strong foe by throwing a small object at him, hitting him in the middle of the eyes, alluding to the old proverb "skill is better than strength".
  • Despite his great resilience, the Bone Cruncher can actually die and even has a dying animation programmed where he raises his hands and starts rotating while he shrinks until he disappears, leaving behind a Diamond (worth 100 points). He has 10,000 HP (in comparison, Frogger only deals about 10 HP damage per hit). This raises the question if the Bone Cruncher was initially intended to be defeated in a standard boss fight and this was changed during development for his final role in the game, and was only given a very high amount of HP to render him almost invincible.
