| ~ Description from the Frogger Atari 2600 instruction manual (Parker Brothers) |
Crocodiles and Alligators are recurring enemies in the Frogger series. They are large reptiles that swim in rivers and which Frogger can risk stepping onto and use them as impromptu platforms to make it to the other side.
Description[]
Large reptiles that swim in rivers and other bodies of water, and which Frogger can risk stepping onto and use them as impromptu platforms to make it to the other side. They usually appear from the second level and onward in most versions of the original Frogger, swimming on the farthest lane of the river. Stepping on a crocodile's body is generally safe, but stepping on its head will make it to open its mouth and eat the player.
In addition to the swimming variant, there are also Crocodile Heads that randomly sneak on the berth homes that Frogger is trying to make his way to. They start peeking slowly, but once their head has fully emerged, entering that berth will get the player eaten.
Despite the difference in species, the games indistinctly treat crocodiles and alligators the same for gameplay purposes, with the former being the predominant term. For example, flyers for the original arcade version of Frogger call them "crocodiles", as well as the Atari 2600 manual for the Starpath version of the game, while the manual for the Parker Brothers version for that same system calls them "alligators" instead.
Swampy, the main antagonist from Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge, is the canonized version of the crocodile that appears in the original Frogger and its 1997 remake. While swimming crocodiles also appear in Swampy's Revenge, stepping on their heads is completely safe, they'll only growl in displeasure.
