Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition is a party top-down platformer video game developed by Zombie Studios and published by Konami released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and mobile phones on July 2012. The game was made to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Frogger series.

Description[]

Frogger's coin-op thrills are back and better than ever. With the original game currently celebrating 30 years of car-dodging, log-jumping, and road-traversing, players can jump into the action with classic and brand-new game modes including Tile Capture, Battle Royale, Freak Out, and more that expand the challenge of Frogger's style of run-and-dodge gameplay.

Customize your game board with a variety of different skins, from the modern neon style of HYPER ARCADE to the 8-bit sprites from famous Konami franchises such as Castlevania or Contra. Throw down against friends or the CPU in up to four player matches to find out who's really the top frog.

Gameplay[]

Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition brings a new take on the classic Frogger top-down platformer gameplay and revamps it with flashy 2.5D graphics and lots of special effects, while also introducing many new gameplay styles derived from it, with many modes focusing on online multiplayer play, although all can also be played in single player against CPU-controlled opponents.

There are two graphical schemes to choose from: a revamped 2.5D rehash of the classic Frogger graphics, and flashy multicolored vector graphics over a dark background.

There are eight modes to choose from: six main game modes, a mash-up that randomly cycles through variants of all these modes, and a challenge mode; with each mode featuring the classic gameplay of the original Frogger but expanding it by adding new objectives.[1]

Classic

A revamped version of the original arcade Frogger with new gorgeous 2.5D graphics. Gameplay remains almost the same as the original game, although now there are seven berths at the top of the screen to be reached (instead of the usual five), and the ampler wide screen allows to see much more of the playfield than previous ports, allowing hazards to be seen from much farther away, notably reducing the difficulty.

Lady Frog Rescue

Similar to "Classic" mode but focusing on multiplayer. Four frogs compete on collecting as many Lady Frogs as possible and then heading to one of the berths above. The player who scores the most points wins.

Twin Frog

The player controls two frogs at the same time, separated two horizontal squares apart. Gameplay becomes much more difficult than a normal single frog round of Frogger, as now the player has to keep track of two characters simultaneously while watching out for any hazards that may come at either.

Paint

The player has to guide their frog all through a grid-segmented playfield, changing the color of each tile as it steps on them until all the field has been repainted (in a similar style to Q*bert) before time runs out; all this while avoiding a plethora of speeding cars driving horizontally from one edge of the screen to the other.

Tile Capture

Similar to "Paint" but set on a more traditional Frogger playfield and with more emphasis on multiplayer. Each frog has to try to paint as many tiles as possible and then rush to one of the berths at the top of the screen to temporarily lock their tiles in place, earning bonus points when doing so. A round ends when all the berths have been filled, and the whole game ends when there is only one surviving frog left on the screen. Each round gets filled with more and more hazards as the game progresses (speeding cars, crocodiles, snakes, etc.).

Battle Royale

Four frogs battle it all out on the field. While initially powerless, picking up a Lady Frog will turn them hazardous to the touch. A powered-up frog can then chase the other opponents to crush them, with the latter's only mean of defense being to run away until the effect wears off, all while trying to avoid the many environmental hazards on the field (like speeding cars) which can kill any frogs regardless of state. In addition to the Lady Frogs, Flies also randomly spawn on the playfield, each which activates a specific power-up to temporarily hinder all opponents (freeze opponents, invert opponents' controls, teleport, etc.).

Challenge

A mixture of all the above game modes but implementing new rules like adding a time limit to complete a level, or collecting a certain number of power-ups.
