Frogger, fully titled The Official Frogger, is a color LCD mini-arcade tabletop game developed by Coleco Industries, Inc. and licensed and published by Sega, released in 1981. It is a conversion of the arcade hit video game Frogger.
Description[]
A tabletop mini-arcade cabinet conversion of the 1981 arcade hit video game Frogger, released the same year. The machine is powered by four "C" batteries. The cabinet features the same running Frogger artwork from "The Official Frogger" versions of the game released by Sega, and the screen bezel features artwork that replicates that of the original game for further immersion into the arcade experience. The cabinet features a vertically-oriented color LCD screen and a control panel with a four directional digital joystick and a big white RESET button. Additionally, it has a central switch that allows for two difficulty modes of play –SKILL 1 and SKILL 2–, and an OFF option at the center to turn off the machine.
The game itself is a simplified version of the original Frogger. Most of the arcade experience is faithfully recreated, although with the usual limitations of an LCD screen. The player's frog and all other items on the screen move one space at a time, which contrasts with the smoothness of the arcade original. As it is usual with these types of games, all music and sounds are done through beeps made by a basic internal speaker.
Gameplay[]
The objective of the game is for the player to safely guide all of their frogs to the berths located at the top of the screen while avoiding all the hazards that are along the way. The frog first has to make it across a highway with heavy traffic and then cross a river without falling into the water by hopping on turtles and logs floating on it. Most of the aspects of the original game are present on this version, like the turtles diving and a snake that slithers through the central riverbank.
The top of the screen holds space for up to six berths. On SKILL 1, there are only four berths to be filled and these rearrange from place on each level. On SKILL 2, there are six berths to be filled the entire game.
Other changes from the original game include:
- There are only three lanes on the highway section and four lanes on the river section (instead of five each).
- The Lady Frog does not appear in this conversion.
- Touching any part of the snake's body and not just the head is lethal.
- Snakes don't appear on the floating logs.
- Diving turtles instantly submerge/surface instead of telegraphing it first, so it is instead a matter of observing and identifying which groups of turtles dive in and try to avoid stepping on them for the most part.
- Crocodiles do not appear in this conversion.
- Otters do not appear in this conversion.
